The last corn shelling of our farming era.
The farming ended last Fall of 2009
and no crop planting was done this past Spring.
Only hay will be grown and baled.
The corn cribs are ready to be emptied
The corn shellers have been working since 1:30PM when I arrived home to start taking the last pictures of this annual event of the corn shelling.
The Shenk trucks are here
The auger gets the corn in the machine to seperate
Closer view
The corn goes in one truck
The corn cob gets shredded into dust into another truck and will be used for mushroom soil.
Here is hubby standing in the shade, we're in another heat wave of temps in the high 90*F's and humidity is unbearable. And on the third day of recouperating from a knee surgery (Wednesday) - torn miscue and arthritis.
And willing to help shovel the last of the corn that fallen outside the crib
Two trailers loads of corn hauled to Lancaster and about $100 paid to Shenk for their services.
The big business is Shenks comes to use your corn cobs for selling the that for mushroom soil businesses.
My son made this video for me, in case I didn't get home in time from work.
and my video of the corn shelling, before I knew son made one.
All in a day's work and the end of my hubby's crop farming.

Is this kind of a sad day for you and your family?
ReplyDeleteYes, sad but relief too to go ahead with new directions. The hay will still be baled.
